As punishment for acting out in class, Kevin was often sent to the library for a "timeout". Resigned to his fate, he grudgingly started to leaf through a pile of picture books. There were pictures of cute little ponies, cute little puppies, and cute little children with smiling parents beaming behind them. Yuck, yuck, and double yuck! Then, just when he thought he would fall off his chair and die of cuteness, Kevin came upon a picture of a boy in a wolf suit who was threatening to eat his mother. In another picture he was chasing his dog with a fork. This was somebody Kevin could relate to. He kept reading as the boy cavorted through the forest with big hairy monsters. Kevin loved it! The book was, of course, Where the Wild Things Are. From then on, Kevin wanted to illustrate children's books. Not cute children's books, but books for kids like him.

The breezy, slightly chaotic, and intensely colored cartoon illustrations catch the speed of this fast-paced sport. Dressed in 20th-century uniforms, the players also wear accoutrements relating to their personas. For readers whose appetite for Greek mythology has been whetted, an author's note lists movies, books, and Web sites and suggests asking teachers and librarians for more information. Gr. 2-5. A team of Greek gods head to the basketball court in this irreverent picture book that has the look of a comic. Their opponents are a team of famous "mortals"--Hercules, Theseus, and so on, and the announcers are a pair of cheesy commentators, complete with bad ties and sport coats worn over tunics. Predictably, the gods trounce the men, thanks to their unfair advantages: Poseidon creates a tidal wave; Zeus resorts to lightning bolts. The mortals fight back with strategies (a Trojan Horse, for example) drawn straight from literature. Inserted as the announcers' banter or in dialogue balloons, the brief text leaves much unexplained. Children still unfamiliar with Greek mythology may be more frustrated than amused by the references and in-jokes, but O'Malley's full-page drawings include hilarious caricatures and cartoon action that will probably get some laughs--even from kids who aren't clear about the specifics. A final page lists mythology Web and book resources. Teachers will want this to enliven mythology units. Gillian Engberg

A huge favorite to read before bedtime. A really neat concept and well executed. As somebody with a classical history degree I really appreciate the accuracy and neat way to teach about the Greek Gods.

About the Author
Brien was born in Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.A. but grew up on the west coast of Canada. At age 11, he became fascinated with the Native art of the Haida native people, and began carving totem poles, and other related art forms, learning from Native teachers. After completing an Honours Bachelor Of Science degree, Brien decided to take up carving and sculpture full time, at the age of 25. In 1995 he moved to Maui, Hawaii, and was hired as assistant project manager for the building of the 62 foot double hull sailing canoe ( ancestor of the modern day catamaran ) Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani ( Sacred Lizard That Pierces The Heavens ) and the restoration of the famous Mo’olele sailing canoe. This project lasted 2 years. There, having learned how to make Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddles from master carver Keola Sequiera, he started an online outrigger paddle business, which flourished internationally. Peru became his next major area of interest. The study of the Inca culture led to his writing a book, A Brief History Of The Incas which is available on this site, and is now the assistant director of the Paracas History Museum in Paracas, south of Lima. He is also assisting the municipality of Paracas to improve the number of foreign tourists that visit, as well as is fundamental in expanding tourism in general, especially as regards showing all visitors the 10,000 years of human occupation of this area, through tours of major and minor archaeological sites. Other projects, which will result in published books, include one about the ancient history of Hawaii, the mysterious stone monuments of Peru that predate the Inca, and the search for the lost continent of Mu. This will require combining all that he has learned so far, with trips to New Zealand (Aotearoa), Hawaii, and Easter island (Rapanui.) He is the author of 8 books, 4 appearances on Ancient Aliens, season 3, numerous radio interviews, and resides in Peru with his wife.

Folksy accessible writing style, good information

Like any other travel guide for a place I've never been to, I can't speak to the accuracy or completeness of the content of this guide. However, the writing style is casual without being boring and he approaches his subject matter with a lot of curiosity. He tries to paint a historical context for understanding what you're seeing when you visit Machu Picchu and Cusco, for pre-Inca monolithic stone work to Inca stonework itself. I'll be traveling to Peru later this year, so I'll have an opportunity to see how accurate his descriptions are. There is a 'alien' undertone to some of his explanations as to how some of the stonework could have been completed by the indigenous people with the tool technologies they had. He goes to THAT well a few more times than necessary, which I think that detracts from the overall story he's telling. It's very clear he loves this region.

This was honestly a great book for young adults

This was honestly a great book for young adults. It captured my attention and I couldn't put it down for hours straight. It was emotional, and had ups, downs and twists you'd never see coming. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and would like for the author to write a second part to this. It's a great read for teenagers out there, and I would recommend for everyone to buy it. I bought 8 books to gift to families and kids out there. Great work.

Absolutley Obsessed

I rarely put five stars, but this book is just that great. The last time I cried over a book was years ago and this one seriously pulled some heartstrings. This book deserves five stars so much, and I'm obsessed with it even if I haven't finished. (I'm on chapter 18).
I could say more, but I'm pretty much speechless, here. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to.

It deserves to be read

Assassin truly sucked me in with every turn of the page. I'd recommend this book to young adult readers, although it's fit for everyone over the age of twelve. Her bond with the Prince of Astodia is one I hope will never break, no matter where they are. It was emotional, hilarious, and thought-provoking.The main character, Adalia, teaches that no matter what conditions you were raised under and how pressured you can be to make a choice, your heart always knows what the right decision is. The moral is that anyone can create their own future. In the end, you will always find your way.

Credit goes to the sixteen year old author who managed to put this page-turner together.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from Adalia in book two. I hope her adventures never come to an end.
