Casper Rigby, where were you fifty years ago when I was attempting to sort all this Christian myth out? Believe it or not I was a church musician who loved playing the organ but had immense struggles (torment) with believing church doctrine. The question I wrestled with was "how can I be a church musician and yet NOT a "believer?" I finally sorted it all out after many years of studying and searching: Eventually I left church music AND the church behind and have never looked back nor regretted my decision. A book like "Holy S***: The Insanity of Blind Belief" would have been awesome to have had during my "belief crisis." This book was wonderfully written and a fun read. Thanks, Mr. Rigby, for your insight. I especially liked the kind way you ended the book in urging others to reason through the christ myth and "let it go." To sorta quote Martin Luther King: Free at last! Free at last, thank ME! I'm free at last." Thanks again. Larry

After reading about a third of the book, I deleted it from my device and regretted the purchase. The author applies the term 'insanity' far too much in my opinion. Further he takes up much unnecessary space with long bible quotations (often pages long), whereas a short reference verse would do. I do much reading in philosophy and theology and with all due respect, this writer is simply not on the level with most. His analyses I find superficial and again, he far too often reverts to saying such and such belief/narrative is 'insane' with the implication that so are the people holding such. Such 'believers' may be credulous, uneducated, and ill-informed, but certainly as a 'general rule' are not 'insane'. This is in any event one reader's take. Harvey

Great book on the Goddesses of India!

I have this version under the title Devi: Goddesses of India published in India. I am pleased with this book. Many books show Kali as a ruthless killer and destroyer, here you will read about a softer and yet liberating side of Kali for women and men. This book has many articles from diffrent authers which really gives the reader a look at diffrent devis from diffrent points of view. Once I began to read this book I could not put it down. I would also recommend anything by David Kinsley and Kali by Elizabet U Harding .

I'm in the process of reading this book- and am enjoying it. It is informing and looks at the Goddesses from different angles-which i really appreciate. I have learned quite a bit about Goddesses that I had never known before- and it has answered questions that even my parents and grandparents were unable to answer (all Hindu)

"The monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have severely limited the portrayal of the divine as feminine." Please don't think because of the former comment that Hindus beleive in more than one God. The Gita says "God may take any form he/she pleases and at any time he/she pleases." These deities are manifestations ( dictionary definition of manifestation-- One of the forms in which someone or something, such as a person, a divine being, or an idea, is revealed. The materialized form of a spirit.)

Completely Inaccurate Transcriptions

Don't fall victim to the falsely positively rated reviews. Though somewhat comprehensive, the transcriptions featured in this anthology are blatantly inaccurate and do not directly reflect Ms.Mitchell's beautiful songwriting capabilities. River, my favorite, is horribly off, using a major C chord for the beginning piano solo. Do not bother purchasing, unless you want to rip your ears off each time you attempt playing these transcribed "versions".

Why you're not happy with the chords....

The reason for the above reviewer's disappointment in the chords of the Joni Mitchell books is easy to explain; They are not the original chords. Why? Because Joni has had no formal training and has literally made her own tuning up as she goes along. That's why it sounds so refreshingly dreamy and unique. It's like tuning to an open D: notice how frequently she plays chords by just barring the fret board from ABOVE...not reaching around the neck from under neath? Bear in mind that SOME of her books will actually take the trouble to diagram each tuning for each song. Most though, do not.

Fairly disappointing

I bought this anthology based on the two positive reviews from other purchasers. Four stars seemed like a pretty good recommendation. However, I received the book yesterday and was fairly disappointed. Many of the songs are quite poorly done, and all of them are much too simple. Big Yellow Taxi, for instance, has several chords that are clearly not correct and sound nothing like the "real" version. I thought Circle Game was the best rendition overall, but other than that, I wouldn't bother purchasing this. I have not bought any other Joni Mitchell book, but if this is the best out there, then I think I've just discovered a niche in the market....I'll be off writing my own, and accurate, version of these songs!
