Need Improvements

I worked on the past with Arena and since 2005, I did not have more contact with this simulator, for this reason I took the decision to buy a book, just to refresh my knowledge.
I would like to give 5 stars for this one, but even thinking about 3 stars, you have to be very generous.
The content on the index gives the impression that the book will cover the main subjects. But when you start to do the examples, you have to decipher some steps that are not clear.
I spent so much time just looking for the right information, mainly because the final reports do not match with the book examples.
The exercises available do not have answers, so you will never know if you are on the right direction.
I am very disappointed with this book, I took the decision to buy another one (Simulation with Arena by W. Kelton, R. Sadowski and N. Swets)

A coffee-table book with cute anecdotes; not a reference book

Pinball Memories by Marco Rossignoli is a big, colorful impressive tome at first, and probably appreciated by pinball aficionados, and while it does try at times to be reference-like, it fails on that front due mainly to gross omissions of necessary information.

First off, this book has spectacular photography, and it's obvious Rossignoli's real talent is photography and not writing. The book focuses on a seemingly arbitrary selection of classic pinball games, most likely having to do with what the author had access to rather than what was necessarily historically or technologically significant. There are gaping holes in the time period the book covers where major machines and technology are noticeably absent. But what machines are covered have plenty of great photographs. Unfortunately much of the writing that accompanies the photos is less than stellar. In many areas it seems the author is working from a chrononlogical list of pinball machines and describes each machine by listing the machines that came before and after, or were similar, so there's name-dropping galore throughout the book, but no place where these other machines can be found. This is frustrating, as the index lists hundreds of names of pinball machines, most of which when you look them up, you come to a page on another machine with some note that it was designed by the same guy who did X, Y and Z. Not terribly informative.

The price guide portion also is not very useful. Since the author lists a very small sampling of pinball machines, there are gaping holes in any price basis. Plus the prices are simply not accurate. The book appears to be at least five years old and I'm not sure even five years ago, the machines could have been bought for what he claims in some circumstances, and since he's from Italy and lives in Australia now, it's hard to tell what market he's talking about.

Then there are the personal anecdotes strewn throughout the book. They are really interesting if you want to know details about the author, such as whether he's a fan of Guns and Roses or what he was thinking when he saw a particular machine, but I kept yearning for more substantive information than what appears to mainly be frivolous personal anecdotes, paraphrased flyer information, and name dropping cross references.

However, I can't find any fault with the photography. It's top notch.

If your marriage needs help, emergency help, this is it.

My wife and I survived an affair - I was the 'victim' but in a way there can be no victims in an affair. Both of you must be aware of each others needs and become professionals at meeting them better than anyone else can. I know what it is like to feel betrayed - I survived it and my marriage is fortified for having had the experience. I have read the negative reviews here on this book, and I must tell you that I understand their frustration and they are due their pain and anger, but not at this book, it's authors or the power it has to bring your life back to a place where you can live it with your spouse. I never thought I'd find an ordinary world again, but with counseling, understanding, knowledge and the teachings of Dr. Harley (see his other books too!) I did, my wife did, and we hold each other closer than we ever have before. I'm sorry there is a reason for you to look into this book, but have hope - you will feel better when you learn what it teaches you about your spouse's needs and how a marriage must function to maintain those needs. The book also will NOT make the cheating spouse feel like a criminal, and posts many insights from their point of view. This is something those of us cheated ON will perhaps not have much sympathy for but there is A LOT for us to learn from it. The affair is a drug in the cheater's blood - they are prisoners in a cycle that people have fallen victim to since marriage began. They will eventually see the light, but they must do this with their own eyes. By following Harley's advice you can create the best environment for this.

Highly recommended!

I suvived my ordeal by following the advice in Dr. Harley's book as well as on his web site [...] I had an affair several months ago. I was totally confused, devastated, depressed, and thought about suicide. I tried looking for help but most people are not sympathetic toward the wayward spouse. I learned about Dr. Harley and was comforted to know that he understands the wayward spouse's feeling and point of view. I followed his advice regarding total separation from my lover valuable- it was the hardest thing in the world to do- I loved him and the thought of never communicating with him devastated me. But I am so glad in retrospect that I lived throught the withdrawel. I now have a better relationship with my husband, and after three months of not communicating with my lover, I can now see the affiar for the mistake that it was. I am very grateful to Dr. Harley- his iron-clad policy regarding total separation with my lover was absolutely right!

I highly recommend this book especailly if, like myself, you are having an affair and would like advice on what to do next. I understand your pain and struggle. Trust me, buy this book, or at least go to his website and read the articles. You might think that total separtion from your lover is impossible. Trust me, the pain was excruciating, but it was it. I saved my marriage and my life. And you can save yours.

A great roadmap to return from hell

Surviving an Affair is the description of a trip from how a seemingly `OK' marriage can deteriorate to a full-blown affair, and it provides a detailed roadmap of how to survive the affair and eventually recover, hopefully with the renewal of the marriage. This book encompasses the behavioral approaches that Dr. Harley and Dr. Chalmers have successfully used to save marriages, and applies them directly to the affair. The elements that are covered in some of Dr. Harley's other works (`Give and Take' and `Love Busters') are included here. This book presents a balanced viewpoint of the betrayer's view as well as the betrayed (and even presents the view of the other man/woman).
If you're in an affair, either as the betrayed spouse or the betrayer; I strongly recommend this book. It explains the atmosphere that leads up to an affair, and it vividly illustrates how an affair SHOULD end. Most affairs don't end this way; instead, they linger on with the spouse having the affair unable to make a decision. All the while, the betrayed spouse and the children suffer tremendously. But there is hope. This book gives a great deal of insight in to the mechanics of the affair, and it describes how the `betrayed' can hang on through the worse experience of their life to eventually come to a point where reconciliation is possible.
The recovery process outlined in this book is also very detailed. Some of it seems `silly' or trivial at times, but it is important and it really can work (I'm in a marriage that is proof of that).
An affair is Hell. This is a roadmap to get back from Hell.

A Solid Sanskrit Grammar

This is probably the best all-round textbook for learning Sanskrit. Its closest
competitors are Goldman's "Devavanipraveshika" and Coulson's "Teach Yourself
Sanskrit". Maurer's work improves upon both in several ways: 1.It treats Sanskrit
in its Indo-European linguistic context, which will be a reason that many will
come to the study of the language. Previously Mayrhofer's "Sanskrit Grammar" or
Burrow's "Sanskrit Language", neither of which are pedagogic, had to be consulted
by a student interested in historical linguistics. 2.It presents the basic
grammar thoroughly with plentiful vocabulary and practice material for the
beginner. The reasons that prevent me from giving it five stars are these:
1. Price 2. Somewhat uninspired selection of readings. After all, with the
largest world literature, Maurer could have done better than relying on the old war-horse of "Nala and Damayanti", which continues the tradition of
Lanman's "Sanskrit Reader" of a century ago. Goldman, based as it is on the
"Ramayana" excels in this respect, as does Coulson which builds up to an
appreciation of Kalidasa. Few students these days will be satisfied with the
soupy Nala tale when the Bhagavad Gita, the Kama Sutra, the Upanishads and so
many more can be read in its place. Nonetheless, this is a highly recommended book for those who want a sensible, traditional grammar.

Best book for beginners

I teach Sanskrit in Canada, and I've tried using many different textbooks. My goal is to give the student a basic overview of the major components of Sanskrit as quickly as possible, and teach further using authentic Sanskrit literature. This book does exactly that. Instead of teaching grammar topics in the conventional order, it introduces advanced topics right at the beginning in a simplified way, so that students get used to recognizing their usage in context. It also has more thorough explanations of grammar topics than any book I've seen, and uses familiar English examples for comparison. excellent primer

i've been studying sanskrit on my own for 25 years and i own about a half dozen primers. this is an excellent primer, lots of useful charts and information. the pace of the lessons is reasonable for beginners, though wish the translation exercises were worked out maybe at the back of the book so student could check his/her work. two non-content problems: at $65 it's too pricey, and because of the number of pages (ca 850) the binding is thick and it's hard to keep the book open when working the exercises.

With the marked increase in life expectancy achieved during the past century, we can expect that the elderly population will continue to grow disproportionately during the next 50 years. The oldest of the elderly, persons 85 years of age or older, now represent the fastest-growing group not only in developed countries as a whole, but also in emergency departments, intensive care units, and hospital wards. In recent years, much has been learned about the physiologic and pathologic consequences of aging and the varied clinical manifestations of disease in the elderly. The spectrum of illness in middle-aged adults is similar to that in older adults, but the prevalence of various entities differs. In elderly people with diminished functional reserve and coexisting illness, an acute disease often causes perturbations in multiple systems. Clinical presentations may be relatively nonspecific, and mortality is almost always higher than in younger patients. Consequently, diagnostic and therapeutic planning for older patients must be tailored to meet their differing needs and objectives. Unfortunately, there are comparatively few off-the-shelf works a busy clinician can refer to when caring for acutely ill elderly patients. Acute Emergencies and Critical Care of the Geriatric Patient will help to fill this void.

This book consists of four sections that cover the basic principles of critical care, topics related to surgical emergencies and medical emergencies, and special issues. A strength of the book is that each of its 25 chapters can serve as a stand-alone reference for rapid review. The chapters are consistently organized, with clear headings in outline style. As a multiauthored book, it benefits from strict adherence to this unified organization. There are many easy-to-read summary tablews as well as numerous figures that enhance the text. The chapters are well referenced, are organized according to system, and provide useful, though somewhat broad, surveys. Throughout, several thematic issues -- including reduced functional reserve in various organ systems (homeostenosis) and atypical or muted clinical presentations -- and an emphasis on general principles combine to form a cohesive and useful work.

The first section of the book, "Principles of Geriatric Critical Care," focuses on older patients in the emergency department and critical care unit, with particular attention to geriatric pharmacology and the unique nursing needs of the elderly. The second section, "Surgical Emergencies," provides a review of preoperative evaluation, emergency anesthesia, common injuries, the acute abdomen, and vascular catastrophes. Although it is solid and filled with interesting teaching pearls, this section suffers somewhat in comparison with the other sections, especially because of a tendency toward oversimplification of complex concepts.

The chapters in the section entitled "Medical Emergencies" are very well written and provide an outstanding survey of internal medicine in the acute care of elderly patients. Although the chapters overlap somewhat, they are generally complementary and reinforce important facts and concepts. The final section in the book, "Special Issues of Aging," deals with a variety of other important topics related to geriatric acute care, such as elder abuse and acute loss of vision.

This book would be a very good supplement to a complete textbook of medicine. Consistently emphasizing relevant general principles, it will enhance readers' understanding of many problems in the acute care of elderly patients. It will be an excellent resource for all those who care for the elderly in acute care settings.
