It wasn't just typing

Contrary to the criticism of Kerouac's writing as "just typing" his style was stream-of-consciousness but easily understood. And although his style is barely literary (and his life appears to be bereft of real relationships and even value of any sort) he manages to trump Tom Wolfe in one narrow category. Wolfe spent a page and a half in "Bonfire of the Vanities" describing a hangover in searing detail to the point that this reader became queasy. Kerouac used three pages for the same task and brought me to near-despair. It's unfortunate (and telling) that his account was autobiographical.
